'Becoming Martin' is a world premiere production that centers on the mentorship Martin Luther King, Jr., receives when he enters Morehouse College at age 15. Through debate over civil disobedience concepts, Morehouse College President, Dr. Benjamin Mays, sets young MLK on a path towards fighting for civil rights.
This play is a Coterie commissioned work by noted filmmaker, screenwriter, director, and playwright, Kevin Willmott, who currently serves as a professor of film studies at Kansas University and is hailed as one of the most prolific independent filmmakers today, with films such as Ninth Street, C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America, BlacKkKlansman and Chi-Raq, for which he was executive producer and co-writer with Spike Lee. The play is directed by Chip Miller, Assistant Artistic Director at the KC Rep.
The play runs from September 18-October 21 at The Coterie Theater in Crown Center and is recommended for audiences aged 11+.

Amber has been a presence in the Kansas City jazz scene making a place and a voice for her instrument. In the beginning of 2014 the Amber Underwood Project was formed with original members Drew Davis, DeAndre Manning, and Tyree Johnson with the mission to showcase an instrument that is normally used as an auxiliary instrument in jazz but now as a solo instrument. AUP is a modern and fresh take on smooth jazz and R&B sounds. AUP uses the rich tones and colors of the flute to interpret the various styles and genres of jazz.

Since his passing in 2014, Miko Spears, Fahali Igbo, Bird Fleming, Les Izmore, Jessica Ayala, and Brad Williams have kept the flame burning. The Lemonade panel will facilitate a discussion of Beyoncé's cultural importance, artistry, social/political commentary, and empowerment of women of color. The event will include conversation interwoven with viewings of music videos.
