This December, First Friday Film Series is hosting a screening of We are Superman. Kansas City has suffered from hyper-segregation for over 60 years. We Are Superman chronicles the story of Troost Avenue, which lies in the heart of KC. Troost draws a geographic line between black and white, rich and poor. A growing movement unites to transform Troost from a dividing line into a gathering place. On the corner of 31st Street and Troost Avenue, a community of people are battling against prejudicial legislation, exploitative corporations, and a stereotype that has stigmatized the urban core since the suburban revolution. This is the story of their work, their vision, and how they are no longer waiting for a Superman to save them.

Sip N' Sew Kansas City creates a safe space for Black textile crafters to come together and socialize while practicing the ancient art of sewing, quilting, and clothing creation. These gatherings operate on the communal model of Each One Teach One. Experienced participants work with inexperienced participants to increase the productivity of the whole group. Projects will include quilts, bags, clothing and other projects selected by the group.
Kansas City remains scarred from the wounds of slavery and Jim Crow.
Black Kansas Citians are more likely to be born poor, attend underfunded schools, and struggle with unemployment, under-employment, and low wages. They are more likely to experience violent crime like homicide. There exists a massive wealth and health gap between black and white Kansas Citians; life expectancy for the former is many years lower, and the infant mortality rate is twice as high. Black Kansas Citians are more likely to be pulled over by police, placed under threat of racial profiling, abuse and unnecessary force, and even death.
What can be done to address these and other challenges? Where do we go from here?
