The Jazz tradition is about expression, freedom, improvisation, innovation, and creativity. One of the most important aspects of Jazz is that it is carried it out with character, dignity, humility, and courage. To these ideals, the Museum presents the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award to Jon Batiste, who is currently the house bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which currently claims the number one spot in late-night television. Batiste engages new demographics who may not have had the opportunity to be exposed to this amazing art form.
Front/Space is pleased to present "Afro-Jamaican, American" an exhibition of photographs by Imani Nixon exploring the intersection of heritage and gender roles. Nixon hails from Jamaica, but ultimately Africa, and addresses “blackness” through her own three cultural contexts; African, Jamaican, and American. The use of patterns and textiles, derivative of those present in West Africa, references a history of colonial slave labor in Jamaica. Coupled with the feminine form, the historic role of black women is centralized in the imagery. The body language of the figures photographed is augmented by surrounding wall patterns which call to mind domestic spaces. Through repetition, the viewer’s eye navigates beyond the frame, creating a conversational space for this cultural identity to exist outside the bounds of a framed, oft-misrepresented reality.
