Be Bop and Beyond examine Kansas City's live music scene and Jim Crow Segregation in the Heart of America. The tour features First Friday street vendors on 18th and Vine. Hear Kansas City's up and coming jazz artists at the Mutual Musicians Foundation 1823 Highland where Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie met then went on to revolutionize jazz with a new style known as bop.
Nixon is a photographer whose work concerns itself with the exploration of heritage and a questioning of gender roles. She uses research and history to draw connections between her Jamaican, African, and American heritage. Her art attempts to address notions of “blackness” and to develop a concretization of this abstract cultural concept through visual medium.
Bringing together those from the education and entrepreneurial sectors. This will provide an opportunity to network with those you may not know, learn about resources to support you as an educator or entrepreneur and just have fun after a long work week.
This year’s event will not only feature the largest barbecue competition in the world, but also offer new public programming including: opportunity to taste great BBQ from Kansas City restaurants, buy BBQ merchandise, enjoy a family-friendly carnival, and relax in a beer/cocktail garden while listening to local bands perform on Friday and Saturday. Paris of the Plains Cocktail Fest (PoPfest), the Midwest’s signature cocktail festival, returns to Kansas City September 7th -10th.
