Join honorary host Mayor Sly James for the 5th Annual Troost, Jazz and Soul Experience to benefit Reconciliation Services! You are in for a fun-filled night featuring unbelievable live Jazz music, including a set by the students of the Lincoln Prep Jazz Band, dancing, drinks, tasty hors d'oeuvres, a silent auction, live painting, and a special presentation.
This is a "roaming" event rather than a sit down dinner, so wear your dancing shoes, check out the "History of Troost" hallway, get your picture taken in all your finery, and enjoy the rich architectural beauty of the historic Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland.
The Troost Festivals are dedicated to celebrating the diversity of the Troost community. By recognizing our collective cultures and learning to draw out the best and let go of the worst, a new culture emerges that transcends what any of us could be merely on our own. We really become “better together.”
‘Troost Folks’ is a spontaneous effort to build community in the urban core, focusing initially on the 3100 block of Troost Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. Since 2005, a festival has been held to encourage “neighbors celebrating neighbors,” so that Troost Avenue will be a ‘meeting place’ rather than as a ‘racial dividing line’.
The idea of an ‘urban village’ stimulates rethinking of community. There are numerous agencies to meet the needs of disadvantaged people and there is also a sizable community of ‘movers and shakers’. We are seeking to get beyond ‘agency mentality’; while at the same time, resisting gentrification with ‘middle-class’ values.

"Satchel Paige Memorial Stadium, located at E. 51st St. and Indiana Ave., was opened in 1985 to recognize Paige’s accomplishments. The beautiful field boasts a towering right field fence similar to the “Green Monster” at Boston’s Fenway Park. The stadium represents a piece of black history and is one of the nicest youth facilities in the metropolitan area."
