Offered FREE on Fridays at 10:00 a.m. in the atrium of the American Jazz Museum for children in the greater Kansas City area. The program introduces kids to the sounds and styles of jazz, America’s art form! JAZZ Storytelling features an internationally renowned cast including vocalist Lisa Henry, storyteller Brother John, bassist Tyrone Clark, and drummer Mike Warren.
On the third Friday of each month, the American Jazz Museum celebrates the birthdays of local jazz musicians and honors #Jazz100 musicians who would be celebrating their 100th birthday. We'll open a mini poster exhibition about our honorees and throw a musical birthday party in our Atrium. Join us for cake, music, dancing, and a celebration of Kansas City's unique jazz sound!
In February, we're celebrating Myra Taylor and Ben Kynard with a Birthday Beat party in the Gem Theater!

Hailing from Houston, Texas, Robert Glasper is a jazz pianist with a knack for mellow, harmonically
complex compositions that also reveal a subtle hip-hop influence. Inspired to play piano by his mother, a gospel pianist and vocalist, Glasper attended Houston's High School for the Performing Arts.
The Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History (ASALH), the founders of “Black History Month” has set the national theme for 2017 as “The Crisis In Black Education.” The Greater Kansas City Black History Study Group will explore this theme on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at the Black Archives of Mid-America.
Written and produced by Fox 4 News film critic Shawn Edwards, the documentary features commentary about the history of Black film by Danny Glover, Will Smith, Jamie Foxx, Queen Latifah, Common, Thandie Newton and many other Black stars. The 100 Best Black Movies (Ever) premiered at the Gem Theater to a sold out house in 2007 and has screened in Los Angeles, New York, and London. In honor of the film's 10th anniversary, the American Jazz Museum in conjunction with Hotel Girl Movie Boy Productions is hosting a free community screening.
“On Race & Privilege” will feature two of the nation’s foremost experts on structural racism and white privilege. Dr. john powell (sic), Executive Director of the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society and author of Racing to Justice, as well as Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr., founder of America & MOORE, LLC, the White Privilege Conference (WPC), and co-author of Everyday White People Confront Racial & Social Injustice, will engage in critical dialogue on the specific actions we need take to create a just and equitable society for tomorrow. These leaders will tackle salient issues such as inequity in policing, violence, early learning, wage/employment, and access to healthcare.
