Cécile McLorin Salvant started classical piano studies at five years of age and began singing in the Miami Choral Society at 8 years of age. Over the years, she has developed a curiosity for the history of American music, and the connections between jazz, vaudeville, blues, and folk music. Cécile carefully chooses her repertoire, oftentimes unearthing rarely recorded, forgotten songs, with strong stories.
Join us in one of KC's newest distilleries for an hour long yoga class followed by a complimentary tasting and $5 Bloody Mary's or Screwdrivers. Suggested donation of $5-$10.
Participate in a dialogue about the representation of "The Other" in media and popular culture. We will sample clips from culturally-specific sitcoms of the 1960s thru today, and consider the importance of representation as well as its problematics.
"Cooley High," heralded as the “Black American Graffiti“, has influenced a number of contemporary African American film directors (Spike Lee, John Singleton, Kevin Willmott). Widely considered the precursor for the genre of the African American neighborhood film and set in 1964, Cooley High centers on a group of high school friends who live on the Near North Side of Chicago and enjoy life to the fullest… parties, hanging out, meeting new friends. Life for two of the friends changes dramatically when they meet a pair of career criminals and are falsely arrested in connection with stealing a Cadillac. Cooley High follows their lives through the dramatic end to their High School year.
